Male Factor

As a woman, if your goal is to become pregnant with your husband or male partner’s sperm, one of the first things we’ll need to do is assess his reproductive health. That’s because an estimated 30 to 40 percent of infertile couples have difficulty conceiving because of an issue related to the male partner. In reproductive medicine, this is known as “male factor infertility.”

We offer a variety of services to evaluate and treat male factor infertility. Dr. Whitman-Elia works closely with our urology consultant to give the men in our care highly specialized treatment.

This area of infertility brings with it some emotional and psychological considerations unique to men. We know that often, men feel that their fertility issues are negative reflections of their masculinity or their ability to be good providers. Please, rest assured that we understand these dynamics.

We make sure our male patients understand that this is a health issue only – and one that can likely be resolved. Your partner is also sure to appreciate the way we approach men’s care. We’re discreet and sensitive at all times, with respect for privacy, dignity and the ever-changing emotional needs of our patients.

Here’s a brief look at some of the many services we provide our male patients:

  • Routine semen analysis
  • Anti-sperm antibody testing
  • 24-hour motility testing
  • Semen washing for intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • TESE – testicular sperm extraction

When these or any other tests or treatments are necessary, our professional staff will be here to answer questions and to make sure everyone is informed and comfortable about the process. We encourage your husband or partner to call us any time to discuss his concerns.
